Intel's stock breached $100 on July 16, 2024, shedding over 7% in a single session. The trigger? A technical breakdown of support? An earnings whisper from the sell-side?

No. The trigger was that reality caught up with narrative—the way it always does when capital expenditure runs ahead of revenue by a factor of three.

Context: The Machinery That Forgot How to Count

Intel is not a startup. It is a $120B+ revenue giant with an IDM model that was once the envy of the world. But since 2020, the company has been executing a high-stakes pivot: IDM 2.0. The thesis is simple—become a foundry for the rest of the industry, compete with TSMC on process leadership, and leverage scale to amortize the insane cost of building fabs in Ohio, Arizona, Ireland, and Germany.

Sounds good on paper. The problem is the balance sheet.

Additionally, the CHIPS Act provides $8.5B in direct grants and up to $11B in loans for Intel's U.S. fabs. That reduces the effective Capex burden by roughly 30%.
